The Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers (MHACY) has partnered with the Family Service Society of Yonkers (FSSY) to support kinship families in their search for affordable housing. Kinship families—those led by grandparents or other relatives raising children in the absence of their biological parents—are given local preference alongside other priority groups such as disabled individuals, veterans, and the homeless. This initiative makes them eligible for priority placement in affordable housing and access to Section 8 vouchers.
The FSSY Kinship Support Program plays a crucial role in this effort by conducting community outreach and assisting kinship caregivers in completing MHACY’s intake forms to determine their eligibility. With over 1,450 grandparents in Yonkers raising grandchildren, this program provides essential support to families facing financial challenges.
